Scarifiers
Essential for a healthy lawn: they remove moss and thatch and aerate the soil so water and nutrients reach the roots. We recommend scarifying at least once a year, in spring.

Over the years a layer of thatch builds up between grass and soil — old roots, clippings and moss — stopping water, air and feed from reaching the roots. The lawn yellows, holds water and moss takes over. A scarifier deals with this using vertical blades that cut through the layer and pull it out. It should not be confused with an aerator, which only combs the surface with spring tines and is far gentler; many models come with both cartridges. Electric and battery versions suit domestic lawns, while petrol machines handle large areas.
How to choose
- Match the working width to the area: on a large lawn, every extra centimetre saves several passes.
- Check that the depth is adjustable and easy to set: scarifying too deep weakens the sward.
- A collection box saves raking afterwards, which is the heaviest part of the job.
- Consider an interchangeable cartridge (blades and tines) if you also want to aerate between scarifying rounds.
At Tecomac we talk you through the full calendar in our Palafrugell shop: cut low, scarify, overseed and feed, and in what order. We work with brands such as Husqvarna, stock blades and spares, and service the machines in our own workshop.
