The Empordà garden calendar: what to do, month by month

The Mediterranean climate of the Empordà sets the rhythm of the garden: mild winters, dry summers and the tramuntana always ready to have its say. This calendar sums up the main jobs so your garden and vegetable patch stay one step ahead all year round.

Winter (December – February)

This is the time for pruning deciduous trees and fruit trees, while the sap is down. It is also the ideal moment to hire a wood chipper and turn all those cuttings into mulch for your borders.

  • Prune fruit trees, olives and deciduous trees on frost-free days.
  • Chip the prunings: free chippings for the vegetable patch.
  • Book your machinery in for a service. The workshop is quieter in winter, so your machine will be ready and waiting for spring.

Spring (March – May)

The lawn wakes up: time to scarify, take the first cut and feed it. In the vegetable patch, work the soil with the tiller and get your summer crops in.

  • Scarify the lawn once it starts growing strongly.
  • Go back to a weekly cut, never taking off more than a third of the blade.
  • Check the irrigation before the heat arrives.

Summer (June – August)

With the drought, raise the cutting height on the lawn mower and mow less often. This is peak season for brushcutters, keeping boundaries and plots clear — and remember that the fire-protection strip is a legal requirement in many of the area's urbanisations.

Autumn (September – November)

The leaves come down and the blower earns its keep. It is the second good window for scarifying and overseeding the lawn, and the moment to get the firewood in with the log splitter before the cold sets in.

A word from the workshop

Every change of season is a good moment to check filters, oils and blades. If you would rather we did it for you, give us a call and we will have the machine ready before you need it.
