Log splitters

Preparing winter firewood with an axe is slow, exhausting and not always safe. A log splitter does the work for you with a hydraulic ram that drives the log against a wedge until it opens. Vertical models work with the log standing on end, so there is no need to lift heavy rounds: the usual choice when a lot of firewood is involved. Horizontal models are more comfortable for medium diameters and for working at table height. The drive can be electric for domestic work, petrol-engined for the field, or driven from a tractor's power take-off.

How to choose

  • The tonnage must suit the diameter, the species and the condition of the timber: green, knotty wood demands far more force than dry, straight logs.
  • Check the maximum log length it accepts and that it matches the length you cut your firewood to.
  • Decide between vertical and horizontal according to the weight of the rounds and whether you will work standing or seated.
  • Verify the safety features: two-handed control, automatic return and a stable table with side supports.

At Tecomac we help you pick the right size for the amount of firewood you actually prepare each year. In our Palafrugell shop you will find hydraulic oils and spare parts, and we carry out servicing and repairs in our own workshop.
