Lawn mowers

The lawn mower defines how a garden looks, because the weekly cut is where most of the work happens. The range runs from light push models, ideal for small, flat lawns, to self-propelled machines with drive, which make large or sloping areas far less punishing. What you do with the clippings matters too: collection into a box, mulching (the fine cut returns to the soil as feed) or side discharge when the grass has got away from you. The deck material — steel, aluminium or polymer — affects weight, durability and how the mower copes with damp grass.

How to choose

• Set the cutting width by the area involved: a wide deck saves passes, but needs room to manoeuvre.
• Petrol for large areas and damp or long grass; battery for medium gardens, where quiet running and instant starting win.
• On slopes or bigger lawns, do not give up self-propulsion and decent-sized wheels.
• Think about everyday use: easily adjusted cutting height, a folding handlebar and dimensions that suit your storage.
