Lawn tractors
Mow large lawns comfortably from the seat. Powerful, manoeuvrable and long-running, with collection, mulching and side-discharge options depending on the model.
Past a certain size, mowing on foot stops making sense: a lawn tractor turns a whole morning's work into a comfortable run from the seat. These machines are built for large gardens, smallholdings and campsites, with engines meant to run for hours and wide cutting decks. The differences that matter are the transmission (manual gears or hydrostatic, controlled by pedal and far easier to use) and where the grass goes: collection into a rear box, side discharge when the grass is long, or mulching so there is nothing to empty.
How to choose
- Relate deck width to the area and to the obstacles: a wide deck is no use if you cannot get round the trees.
- Choose a hydrostatic transmission if there will be a lot of manoeuvring, or if more than one person drives it.
- Decide on the grass handling before you buy: collecting is tidier, but means stopping to empty.
- Check the turning radius, the width of gates and paths, and any attachments you need (trailer, mulching kit).
