Pressure washers

Some dirt will not shift with water and a brush: moss on outdoor paving, mud packed under a tractor, soil on tools or salt on a boat. A pressure washer deals with it through well-directed pressure and flow. Electric machines cover domestic and medium use and are convenient, since all they need is a socket; petrol-engined models work where there is no power, out in the field or on site. For intensive professional use, hot water machines make the difference on grease and oils that cold water simply will not lift.

How to choose

• Read pressure and flow rate together: pressure loosens the dirt, but it is the flow that carries it away and gets you finished sooner.
• Electric for the house and routine maintenance; petrol if you work far from a socket.
• For frequent use, choose a machine with a heavy-duty pump and head and a motor built for hours rather than minutes.
• Allow for the accessories: a patio cleaner for terraces, a turbo lance, a long hose and an inlet water filter.
